1. What are cookies
Cookies are small text files that the site sends to the user’s terminal, where they are stored to be then retransmitted to the site on the next visit of the same user. By default almost all Web browsers are set to automatically accept cookies. Cookies can be classified according to the following categories:
- “Session” or “persistent” cookies: the first ones are stored on the user’s computer for mere technical-functional needs, for the transmission of session identifiers necessary to allow the safe and efficient exploration of the site; They will cancel at the end of the “session” (from which the name) with the closing of the browser. “Persistent” cookies, however, remain stored on your computer’s hard drive until they expire or are deleted by users and allow you to store your preferences or actions with respect to a site;
- “Technical” or “profiling” cookies: the first ones are those used to “transmit a communication on an electronic communications network or to the extent strictly necessary to the provider of an information society service Explicitly requested by the Subscriber or by the user to provide such service “; This category also included the so-called cookies analytics where they are used directly by the site manager to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site; Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used in order to send advertisements in line with the preferences expressed by the same in the context of network navigation. Because of the invasiveness that such cookies may have within the private sphere of users, European and Italian legislation provides that the user should be adequately informed about the use of the same and express his/her valid consent to use;
- “First party” cookies (i.e. first parties cookies) or “third party cookies”: according to the website or domain from which they originate. The first party cookies are, in essence, the cookies set and managed by the site owner. For these cookies, the obligation of the information and the indication of the modalities for the eventual blocking of the cookie is the responsibility of the site owner. Third party cookies are the cookies imported from a domain other than the one visited by the user. For these cookies, the obligation of the informative and the indication of the modalities for the eventual blocking of the cookie is the third party, while the owner of the site is solely obliged to include on the site the link to the third party site where such information are available.
